Skeoge Community Hub located in Clon Dara

Greater Shantallow Area Partnership and APEX (Housing Association), supported by the Outer North Neighbourhood Partnership recently secured funding from the Nationwide Foundation to establish a new, integrated housing & community services team to work with and for residents in the Skeoge area of Derry City.

The 18 month pilot project will see the partners work with residents to not only design, furnish and programme a new estate based community drop in centre but also give partners the opportunity to combine / pool resources differently and learn from each other in order to more effectively tackle social and health inequalities experienced by residents.

GSAP received the keys in early March 2020 from APEX HA and began to fit out the building with support from Nationwide Foundation, Glenabbey Community association and SureStart Shantallow.

The pilot also aims to ensure residents are more informed of what services are available both locally, within Ballyarnett DEA and across the city by supporting the opening of a new resident led, purpose built Community Hub, the development of a new Resident Forum and by creating accessible volunteer opportunities.

A Household Survey is currently underway in late August (1300+ households) to find out what residents would like to see happen in the centre and to encourage local residents to get involved.

The learning will become embedded within the practices of GSAP, APEX and local Ballyarnett DEA partners – becoming an integral part of the new Community Planning and Neighbourhood Renewal processes.  It is anticipated that the project will become a future model of partnership working to be employed in other areas / communities.

The new Community Hub building will assist in fostering local community cohesion and a positive sense of identity, whilst providing a space for local residents to interact, particularly through the establishment of a Social Café on ground floor which we hope to have open by the end of the year.
