As a direct result of the DOE’s Challenge Fund investment, immediate benefits have included:

  • The Local Nature Reserve entrance will be enhanced for biodiversity and habitat creation in the long term. (Plans are now ready at design stage E);
  •  The updated management plan (2016-20) will continue to build upon the initial biodiversity improvements, to ensure the long term management of this protected site;
  •  The education programme engaged with 12 schools (268 pupils), to make the 'world around us' curriculum relevant and a possible outdoor classroom for local schools as a resource;
  •  The volunteering programme will provide long term skills for local people to manage woodlands and increase the recording of bird species. (22 volunteers took part in the Woodland Management, and 106 individuals took part in the Winter Waders Event)

 The GSAP continues to work with the Bay Road Steering Group, and Derry City & Strabane District Council in order to continue to improve the facilities at the Local Nature Reserve, and ultimately to encourage use of the park by local residents and other visitors to the area.
