Ballyarnett Country Park

Ballyarnett Country Park is a key civic asset situated in the Greater Shantallow area, comprising 145 acres of green and open space.

The Park is in the ownership of Derry City and Strabane District Council – transferred from the Department of Environment in the early 1980’s. The park has had little investment over the years and local groups / residents have called for improvements to the space.

In 2012, Council confirmed their interest developing the Park by stating they are Committed to working in partnership with the Outer North Neighbourhood Partnership, stakeholders, users and interested parties in realising the true potential of Ballyarnett Country Park as a major physical, social and economic regeneration project for the Outer North area within the wider city context

In January 2013 MWA Partnership Ltd and their selected Design Team were appointed by Council and the Outer North Neighbourhood Partnership to undertake the production and completion of a Strategic Masterplan.

Following extensive community, resident and statutory engagement a Masterplan was developed for the park.  The draft Masterplan was submitted for Pre-Planning discussions in late 2013 and through further consultations, surveys and reports has gone through several revisions.

Outline Planning Permission is now sought for the Masterplan with a live planning application currently being assessed – you can follow the progress on this application at the NI Planning Portal (Planning Ref No: LA11/2016/0497/O)

Ballyarnett Country Park offers exciting opportunities to regenerate our local community through a sustained investment in the social, economic, physical and cultural regeneration of this underutilised, yet exceptional green space.
